Comparing Dental Solutions: Implant-Supported Dentures vs. Fixed Implant Bridges

People Asked:

Which solution is right for your smile?

Choosing the right replacement for missing teeth depends on your unique dental anatomy, your goals for comfort, and your budget. Both implant-supported dentures and fixed implant bridges offer significant quality-of-life improvements over traditional dentures, but they function in different ways.

Whether you are based in East Melbourne or visiting us from nearby Richmond or Fitzroy, Dr Leighton Phu is here to help you weigh these options. At our Jolimont Road clinic, we focus on providing evidence-based solutions to ensure you can eat, talk, and smile with confidence.

Understanding Your Options

Implant-Supported Dentures

These are a set of dentures retained by at least two dental implants. While they remain removable, they “click” onto the implants for added stability.

Benefits: The primary advantage is that the denture is significantly more secure than a traditional, non-implant denture, meaning it won’t fall out while you are eating or talking.

Considerations: Because they are held by two implants, a small amount of movement or “rocking” can still occur, though it is a substantial improvement over no implants at all. They are often an excellent solution if you have limited bone volume in the rear of the jaw or are looking for a more cost-effective option.

Fixed Implant Bridges

These restorations are securely screwed into place using at least four dental implants. Because they are fixed in the mouth, they offer a feel that is much closer to natural teeth.

Benefits: They provide superior stability and do not rock or move while you are eating or talking.

Considerations: These bridges cannot be removed by the patient and are a more comprehensive restorative choice.

We invite you to experience dedicated care at our East Melbourne practice to determine which solution aligns with your needs. To discuss your options, please call us on (03) 8820 1699 or book an appointment online today.
