Sedation Dentistry

At DENTL in East Melbourne, we understand that dental anxiety is a genuine barrier for many patients. That’s why we offer a range of sedation options designed to support your comfort during treatment.

Whether you experience mild anxiety or find dental visits particularly challenging, our team will discuss the most appropriate sedation option for your situation.

Sedation Dentistry Options at DENTL

At DENTL, we offer several levels of sedation to suit different needs and procedures. Your treating dentist will discuss which option is most appropriate for your individual situation during your consultation.

  • Oral Sedation: Taken approximately one hour before your procedure, oral sedation helps reduce anxiety and promotes a relaxed state during treatment. You remain conscious throughout but will feel noticeably calmer. Some patients have limited memory of the procedure afterward.
  • IV Sedation: Administered directly into the bloodstream, IV sedation produces a deeper level of relaxation than oral sedation. Most patients have little or no memory of the procedure afterward. You remain conscious but deeply relaxed throughout treatment.
  • Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide Sedation): Inhaled through a mask during your procedure, nitrous oxide promotes a relaxed, calm state during treatment. One of the advantages of nitrous oxide is that its effects wear off relatively quickly once the mask is removed, allowing most patients to resume normal activities shortly after their appointment.
  • General Anaesthesia: For patients requiring a complete absence of consciousness during treatment, general anaesthesia is available in-house at DENTL. This option is suitable for extensive procedures or patients with significant dental anxiety, and is administered and monitored by our specialist anaesthetist and nursing team throughout. See our General Anaesthesia page for full details including risks and recovery information.

Each option is assessed individually. Our team will help you understand which approach best suits your needs and clinical situation.

Why Consider Sedation Dentistry?

Supporting Comfort in Dental Care

  • Anxiety Support: Sedation options are designed to help reduce the experience of dental anxiety during treatment, supporting patients who find dental visits particularly challenging.
  • Efficient Treatments: Sedation can allow more treatment to be completed in a single visit, reducing the number of appointments required for patients with complex needs.
  • Comfort During Treatment: Sedation aims to reduce discomfort during dental procedures. The level of comfort experienced varies depending on the type of sedation used and individual factors.
  • Monitored Throughout: Our clinical team monitors you closely throughout any sedated procedure, supporting your safety and wellbeing from start to finish.

At DENTL, every visit is approached with your comfort and care in mind.

The Step-by-Step Process

1.

Pre-Treatment Consultation: We discuss your concerns, health history, and preferences with you to determine the most appropriate sedation option for your needs.

2.

Administration of Sedation: Depending on the agreed approach, oral sedation, nitrous oxide, IV sedation, or general anaesthesia is administered before treatment begins.

3.

Dental Procedure: Our clinical team carries out the necessary dental work while you’re in a relaxed or unconscious state, depending on the sedation used.

4.

Post-Procedure Care: Our team monitors your recovery before you leave. For IV sedation and general anaesthesia, a responsible adult must accompany you home.

Step out with a smile and a memory of ease, not discomfort.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will I feel any pain with sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is designed to minimise discomfort during dental procedures. The level of pain relief depends on the type of sedation used. Local anaesthetic is typically used alongside sedation to manage discomfort at the treatment site. Individual experiences vary.

How long will I be sedated?

The duration depends on the type of sedation used and the length of your dental procedure. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly once the mask is removed. IV sedation and oral sedation effects may last several hours. General anaesthesia lasts for the duration of the procedure, with a monitored recovery period afterward.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Sedation dentistry, when carried out by trained clinicians following appropriate guidelines, is considered suitable for most eligible patients. Before proceeding, your health history is reviewed to assess your suitability. Your clinical team monitors your vital signs throughout any sedated procedure. As with any medical intervention, there are risks, which are discussed during your consultation.
