If you’re searching for same-day dental implants, you’ve likely seen marketing promising immediate results. The reality is more nuanced, and understanding what’s actually possible will help you make an informed decision. At DENTL East Melbourne, we believe in honest communication about treatment timelines and outcomes. Call (03) 8820 1699 to discuss your specific situation with our team.
Can you really get dental implants in one day?
The short answer: not exactly, but there’s a procedure that comes close.
Traditional single-tooth implants involve placing a titanium post into your jawbone, then waiting 3-6 months for the implant to fuse with the bone (a process called osseointegration). Only after this healing period is complete can your permanent crown be attached. This timeline exists for good reason: rushing the process risks implant failure.
What some practices market as “same-day implants” is typically one of two things: either All-Teeth-On-Four treatment (where you do receive teeth the same day, but they’re temporary), or immediate loading protocols that carry higher risk and aren’t suitable for everyone.
What is All-Teeth-On-Four and how does it work?
All-Teeth-On-Four is a full-arch restoration technique where four implants support an entire set of upper or lower teeth. The key difference from traditional implants is that you receive a fixed set of temporary teeth on the same day as your surgery.
Here’s what the timeline actually looks like:
Day of surgery: Four implants are placed in your jaw using precise, 3D-guided positioning. Before you leave, a temporary set of teeth is attached to those implants. You walk out with functional teeth.
Healing period (3-6 months): Your implants integrate with your jawbone while you wear the temporary teeth. You can eat, speak, and smile during this time, though you’ll need to follow dietary restrictions initially.
Final teeth: Once healing is complete, your temporary teeth are replaced with your custom-made permanent prosthesis, designed for optimal fit, function, and appearance.
So while you do receive teeth the same day, the complete process takes several months. The “same-day” element refers to not leaving the surgery without teeth, which is a significant benefit for patients who might otherwise need to wear removable dentures during healing.
Who is a candidate for All-Teeth-On-Four?
All-Teeth-On-Four may be suitable if you’re missing most or all teeth in an arch (or have teeth that cannot be saved), have adequate bone density in key areas of your jaw, are in reasonable general health for surgery, and want fixed teeth rather than removable dentures.
It may not be suitable if you have severe bone loss in specific areas (though grafting can sometimes address this), uncontrolled diabetes or other conditions affecting healing, or are a heavy smoker (smoking significantly increases implant failure rates).
A comprehensive assessment including 3D imaging is essential to determine whether you’re a suitable candidate. At DENTL, Dr Leighton Phu has completed advanced training in implant dentistry at Loma Linda University and is a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.
What about same-day crowns?
If you need a single crown rather than implants, DENTL does offer genuine same-day service using CEREC technology. This system allows us to design, mill, and fit a ceramic crown in a single appointment, typically within 1-2 hours.
CEREC same-day crowns are suitable for damaged teeth that still have a healthy root structure. They’re not the same as implants, which replace the entire tooth including the root.
What should you ask at your consultation?
If you’re exploring implant options, bring these questions to your consultation:
- Am I a candidate for All-Teeth-On-Four based on my bone density and health?
- What’s the realistic timeline from first appointment to final teeth?
- What will I be able to eat during the healing period?
- What are the risks specific to my situation?
- What happens if an implant doesn’t integrate successfully?
